The approximately 1700m high volcano Kelud has become one of the tourist attraction in East Java. A infrastructure has now been created. A paved road leads to a car park up the mountain Kelud. From there, a path leads through a tunnel directly into the crater.

In the crater itself, there was until the last activity in 2007 a beautiful crater lake. I by myself was lucky still to cool my calves in sulfur water of Kelud crater lake. Since 2007, visitors can now admire a lava dome inside the crater. That is a 200m high pile of black rock, from whose cracks and crevices still rising steam. The black cathedral is an interesting contrast to the lush green cliffs of the surrounding caldera. Always a good photo shot.

The mountain itself offers a beautiful scenery. But already the drive there, through the lush grounds fields and plantations of East Java and through many small villages, offers a lot of variety and the opportunity to visit a local market and watch the hustle and bustle of the local population.

INFO: dangerous vulcano

The volcano Kelud is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. A devastating outbreak in 1919 killed 5,000 people. Also, the eruptions of 1951, 1966 and 1990 led to casualties among the inhabitants of the villages around the volcano.

However, visitors must not be afraid to be cooked right at the next outbreak. Since the Kelud is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, he is also one of the best under surveillance. The victims of the recent volcanic eruptions are all due to the fact that local farmers are not followed the evacuation recommendations of authorities.
