Running in Jakarta
City running in Jakarta becomes more and more popular. However, pollution, traffic jam and hazardous sidewalks might make it problematic on the first view. If you nevertheless dare to run in Jakarta, you will be surprised about the insigts you get and the possibilities you have.
Plot your route in advance. Start before 7 a.m. to avoid big heat and pollution.
Heat, humidity and smog will slow you down. Don't overdo it and accept that you will not run your usual pace. Think of your health.
Take some small money with you in order to buy bottled water along the way.
Watch the ground: Jakarta's sidewalks and roads are hazardous.
Things to do
Ragunan Zoo has an area of 5 km around, without traffic and smog. After paying the entrance fee of Rp. 3.000 you can run and enjoy the animals at the same time.
Surprise, surprise!! Jakarta even offers the possibility of running in the heart of downtown Jakarta with no traffic. Is it possible? Yes it is. The most important street in Jakarta, the Sudirman street in Central Jakarta, at the National Monument, is closed for traffic every Sunday morning. Why? The government wants to offer the possibility for people to run and walk for exercise. So, get going!
Jakarta Free Spirit is running club formed and run mostly by expatriate living in Jakarta.
Jakarta Free Spirit runs regularly every Saturday morning at Ragunan Zoo, start at 6:00 am.
And on Sunday at 6:00am they start at McDonald Kemang. This is a long distance run of approximate distance 20-35km.
Another organized running group in Jakarta is Indo Runners. They start on 6:30am at various places in Jakarta. Detailed information can be found on their facebook page, unfortunately only in Bahasa Indonesia.
