This is the best place to see the paddy rice terraces in Bali. Jatiluwih is located about 20 kilometers away from Tabanan and
785 meters above sea level.
Jatiluwih can be translated as "truly wonderful". And truly wonderful it is, because at the edge of the mountain Gunung Batukau rice
farmers have conjured up a little architectural masterpiece. Rice terraces follow the contours of the hillsides as far as the eye can
see. It is best to walk on foot through the fields, with good weather you can then look even to the sea.
The rice terraces of Jatiluwih are pretty much in the middle of the island of Bali, near Ganung Batukaru. This is a very rural area.
And there are few groups that stray far. And that inaccessibility is what keeps the crowds away. Most people who leave end up in Kuta,
Ubud, places that are easy to get to. Jatiluwih is a lot harder to get to and since everyone in Bali does not want to make the effort
to explore Bali, you can see these beautiful rice terraces without hordes of people crowding around you or ruining the scenery.

Balinese farmers work together in a cooperative manner, called Subak. Since in the mountainous area in the hinterland of
Bali it was not easy to find water, needed for the irrigation of rice fields, the farmers had to work together.
To solve the
problem, a sophisticated irrigation system had to be created. The water flows on aqueducts, through up to 2km long underground
tunnels, and through rocks to the fields where it is distributed. The continuous development and maintenance could not be done
by individual farmers.
A historical manuscript tells us that Subak in Jatiluwih has been working since the year the 1071st So
the farmers of Jatiluwih for centuries have not only created a unique system of water supply, but also realized an efficient and
environmentally sustainable rice production. Incidentally they also created a natural work of art, which 2012 was recognized
consistently for UNESCO World Heritage Site.
